Guest Talk by Hanna Wirman – Wider Margins, Countless Others

April 17, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Center for Computer Games Research is pleased to announce a guest talk by Hanna Wirman, from Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Design, titled “Wider Margins, Countless Others”. The talk will take place on Tuesday, April 17th, from 12:00-13:00, in room 2A08 at the IT University of Copenhagen.

“Wider Margins, Countless Others”

A game’s eSports compatibility is considered a mere ‘feature’ and freemium game ‘whales’ comprise just the 0.15% minority of players. Yet, these are both aspects that often make games commercially viable. Meanwhile, serious games development and forevergreen ‘gamification’ continue to attract major funding and governmental attention regardless of how much they may be frowned upon in certain scholarly contexts. Stemming from such complex game cultural phenomena that merge persuasion with technicity and politics with economics, this talk proposes a wide view on how to look at ‘difference’ in games. I draw on my own projects and research in order to articulate several levels of ‘Othering’ in today’s digital playscapes.

Dr Hanna Wirman is a researcher, lecturer, and a leader of several university-based game development projects. She coordinates and teaches China’s oldest game development program at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s School of Design. For the past fifteen years, her research has focused on marginal game audiences and on players’ participation in game creation before and after release. Her work has been published in Game Studies, Simulation & Gaming, Games and Culture, Transformative Works and Cultures, TV & New Media, and many other books and journals. Her game designs range from design for children with special needs to games for orangutans. Hanna served as the first president of Chinese DiGRA and currently on the DiGRA Executive Board. She started the Global Game Jam Hong Kong and leads it for the sixth year running in 2018. Her industry talks and keynotes include FDG, TEDxHong Kong and GDC.
